Laundry Room Reveal

The long awaited laundry room reveal is finally here! After about a month of having everything that belongs in our laundry room, in our 4ft. wide hallway, I am thanking the heavens that the room is actually in functioning order again. There are still a couple of things that we want to do, but it's good enough for some reveal action!

Here's the before ... so gross, right!?

and the after:

Let's break it down:

Planked walls and hooks
We installed a floor to ceiling (10x10) wall of barn planks that we reclaimed ourselves. Found, cleaned, removed nails, animal poop, etc. We were able to locate three studs in this wall and mounted each board to all three studs.

I actually persuaded Brett to make a trip to Hobby Lobby one afternoon where we found these hooks. They match the knobs we used for the cabinet and I love them.

Folding Bar
The hooks are hung above the folding bar that we installed. Below the bar are our laundry baskets. The main reason I wanted the planked wall was for support, making it possible to actually install a laundry bar and hooks. Without the planks, the crumbling plaster would have had us in a lot of pain.

The folding bar and shelf above the washer and dryer are made from cedar boards that we purchased form Lowes. We actually took out every single cedar board in the store and chose carefully which to use for the project (yes, while our kids were in the cart screaming at us, they put up with a lot!). We had them cut to size at Lowes and then took them home where they lived in our bedroom for a week, on saw horses, while Brett polyurethane-d them to absolute perfection.

Tile Backsplash
I know you've heard about the backsplash project a few times. Like when I was so excited that we found the tile, and then when I was crying because it was so hard to install, and now I'm just bragging because it's so dang awesome.

The Cabinet
We gave new life to the existing cabinet. We removed it from the wall, took it apart, painted it inside and out, rehung and centered it, and added new hardware. This paint project took us at least 2 weeks to complete.

The Details
Every room in your house should have a few things that you love in it ... even your laundry room.

We managed this project on a way way way tight budget:

Reclaimed boards and installation: free of cost, not free of work!
Hooks and knobs: $10.00 half off at hobby lobby
Cedar boards and poly: $35.00
Paint: $17.00
Tile: $13.00 for 10 sq ft.
Mastic, Grout, and supplies: $40.00

Total Cost: $115.00

Everything else in the room are things that we already had, except that tiny washboard, which I picked up last Friday at goodwill for $1.00, so okay, $116.00 total.

So what do you think? Have I convinced you to make over your laundry room, or install a planked wall in your home, or do you think I'm crazy for even spending $100 in a tiny laundry room?

  2. I'm seriously wishing I was in charge of the DIY projects that happen around here. I would totally make over the laundry room if I could. For some reason my favorite parts are the cedar boards. Those babies are beautiful. I love that you got some hooks from hobby lobby! I've seen those exact hooks at my hobby lobby so it makes me feel like I was kind of there with you when you got them. haha. Our laundry room is sooo boring. I want one like yours! Amazing job Chelsea!

  4. Beautiful. Looks like something out of a great decorating magazine. I think you and Brett should submit it to one of them. Hey, you never know when you might actually win more decorating dollars. It's very nice. I love your choices.

    1. Thanks Donna! We found the boards at Lowes, they're cedar and were unfinished. All we did was coat on some oil based poly to bring out the color and add some shine :)

  8. Next time you have a little issue, such as the mosaic tiles, email me :) I renovate peoples' homes for a living, and as a petite female, I rarely get taken seriously...until I show my portfolio & run circles around men in my field. I'm always happy to share tips with those courageous enough to take on what seems to be overwhelming jobs. Just type in the subject line Help...(tile, tub surrounds, painting, etc, etc.) If it's in my field of expertise, I'll be happy to lend short cut advice if I can, or instructions otherwise. P.S.: yes, I love mosaic tiles & am about to do a travertine stairway landing in broken (not cut: broken) trav tiles from surplus for a customer that is AWESOME. Yay! I love being allowed artistic interpretation!!!

  9. A-MAZ-ING! Love all the details and the reclaimed barn wood ... may have to drive out to your farm and grab me some ... and the Hobby Lobby knobs are perfect!

And my friend/contractor was cursing me out when I showed him those little 1 x 1 mosaic tiles I wanted in my kitchen! And he cursed me out as he installed them and struggled to cut them!

    :)

  13. Love it! I was trying to tell how your shelves fold, or is it you just call them folding shelves because you put your folded clothes on them? Because the thought of a shelf I can put up while folding, and take down afterwards really interests me. My laundry room is teeny-tiny and has to doors on 2 walls, so there is not much room for shelves. I usually fold directly down into a basket or use the top of the washer/dryer... which usually also has detergent/socks baskets/whatever my hubby put up there that needed to go out to the garage (about 5 steps away... sigh.).

  14. I am SO happy for you....BUT...I am SOOOOO jealous of the reclaimed barn wood -- I want it EVERYWHERE in our house, but can't seem to get my hubster on board with me..... :{

  22. Love it !. I feel that the laundry room is as an important room in the house as any other room and shouldn't be overlooked. As I speak I look at our's shaking my head thinking.."oh what did I just say" !. We have the pallets outside for future projects around the home, and am now thinking how wonderful it would be to do the wall behind the appliances so that I can properly anchor baskets without having to wonder if they will fall because they are only attached by hooks into drywall. Thanks for the "kick" I need to get going on ours.. and for your wood wall idea ...

  23. May I ask how you prepped the cabinet so that the paint adhered? Did you use oil or latex? Thanks and it looks great! Missy
